What is gum disease?

Gum disease in pets occurs when there is a build-up of plaque at the base of their teeth. As this worsens, the area surrounding the base of the tooth becomes inflamed, which leads to gum disease.

This can cause the following problems:

  • tooth removal

  • localised pain in mouth and gums

  • bacteria from the tooth entering the bloodstream, causing other infections

  • infections in the jaw bone

The image shows a before and after of a dog who has had a scale and polish to remove plaque, a procedure that can help prevent gum disease.

Looking after your pet's teeth is a staple of preventative healthcare and lowers their risk of gum disease, dental disease and many more dental-related illnesses.

Here's how you can help look after your pet's teeth:

  • brush their teeth 3-4 times a week

  • dental diets

  • dental chews and treats

  • scale and polish - this is where the vet removes plaque from the pet's teeth (See before and after photo)

  • regular health checks to spot any conditions early
